Heat the oil in a frying pan (skillet) over medium heat.
Add the dals.
Stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until fragrant.
Add the dried red chillies and sesame seeds and stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes, or until they start to splutter and are fragrant.
Add the asafoetida and stir-fry for 1 minute.
Season with salt.
Transfer all the ingredients to a mortar and pound with a pestle.
Alternstively, grind in a spice grinder, to make a fine powder.
Sieve (strain).
Store in an airtight container.
