Put the onions in a handi or heavy-based pan.
Add the bay leaves, cardamom pods and 250ml / 8fl oz (1 cup) water.
Bring to the boil.
Then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes until the onions are transparent and the liquid has evaporated.
